If you have been preparing for your very special day then I’m sure securing the perfect hair and makeup artist is high on your list of priorities.
Attending a makeup trial should be a fun, exciting and relaxed experience, so to get the most satisfying results you should try the look you are envisaging while also gaining a better understanding of whether the look will complement the colour scheme, theme and bridal party attire.
A makeup trial will usually run for approximately 1½ hours, so allow enough time to avoid rushing any final decisions. If you are also having a hair trial at the same time allow another three hours.
Makeup trials can be booked up to six months before the wedding date. Some brides like to book in their trial much earlier, even a year before, but this is usually not recommended as trends change and skin condition also changes.
It is really important that you love your bridal makeup design so be honest with your makeup artist throughout the trial. It’s a great idea to take a friend with you to give you a second opinion and make you feel more confident in your decisions.
Every wedding has a unique theme, colour scheme, cultural or religious custom to consider, so it’s very important that you convey these special details to your artist.
What colours are your flowers? What colour are your bridesmaids wearing? Are you having a beach, bohemian, vintage or black tie themed wedding?
Take to the trial a series of bridal makeup photos that you love. Pinterest is a fabulous tool to create boards for all your bridal aspirations. If you have already selected your wedding dress take a picture of this to the trial so the makeup artist can see its colour and style. This will help them with the selection of the tones of shadows to use — and also those to avoid. Whether you love to wear a lot of makeup or rarely wear any at all, and whether you have any skin sensitivities, are also important details to discuss.
Eyebrows should never be waxed up to a week before the makeup trial. It’s difficult for makeup to adhere to an area that has just been waxed so just pluck any stray hairs that return.
Finally, at the end of the trial take lots of photos in natural daylight, indoors and outside. Take close ups, with your eyes open, closed, looking up, looking down, from front on and from each side.
You should feel like a million dollars and look like the very best version of yourself on your wedding day, so if you aren’t completely happy with your final look always speak up — a minor change can make all the difference! ❐
