The winners of the 2016 Hills Building & Design Awards were recently announced at a gala event at Curzon Hall. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was well known TV presenter Jamie Durie, and Mayor Yvonne Keanne and Deputy Mayor Robyn Preston presented awards along with other dignitaries and councillors. Congratulations to all the winners of every category and to the overall winner, Millbrook Homes.
Mayor Yvonne Keane commented, “The Hills is home to outstanding building, construction and design talent, which brings to life some of the most beautiful and innovative projects in the entire country. Encouraging excellence in design has never been more important, particularly with new communities popping up in North Kellyville and Box Hill, and our more established suburbs are going through a period of renewal through rezoning and knock-down and rebuild projects.
“With a greater diversity of housing stock in the form of houses, duplexes, units and town houses coming online, the opportunity to create beautiful products through design innovation has never been more exciting.
“Congratulations to each of our 2016 finalists and winners. Thank you for lending your talent to the Hills, and for your work in helping us continue to be one of the most highly desired places to work, live and play.”

##What was the concept/inspiration behind the design? There was no specific design inspiration. We wanted to create a large and luxurious family home that embodied contemporary Australian lifestyle.

Who is the target market for your design?

The target market is second or third home buyers in the northern and north-western suburbs of Sydney.

##What is the process you go through to create a winning design? The first step is to establish a brief for the home design on what needs to be included so there is a clear goal of what we are trying to achieve. The brief for the 58 Series was to create a two-storey display home that would be an example/representation of who Millbrook Homes are and what they are capable of in design and construction. The home needed to be contemporary in external and internal appearance with a luxurious level of finish and inclusions, and at the same time have the warmth and comfort of a home that is welcoming and relaxing. A key consideration was to ensure that the expectations of potential luxury home buyers were being met with the size and type of areas in the home’s design, the materials used and the level of inclusions selected. The second step is developing the design concept for the home, taking into consideration the site’s unique features, and taking time to ensure all aspects of the design brief have been considered and incorporated. Thirdly, we needed to develop a spec level that captured the materials, colours and décor to bring the vision together cohesively. Developing a great design is only half the equation, though. The home needs to be built well, with attention given to the finer details in construction.
##Which feature of the design do you consider your favourite? It’s tough to pick a favourite part of the design. I love the home’s street presence and articulation, the entry to the home and the immediate impact as you walk through the front door, and I love the outdoor entertaining area with the pool adjacent.

What does it mean to be recognised as the Hills leading building company?

It’s fantastic for Millbrook Homes to receive this prestigious accolade. Winning this award acknowledges all the dedication and hard work that the entire team has put in and recognises Millbrook Homes’ design and construction abilities.
