community, house & garden | By Sydney Hills & Hawkesbury Living | Tuesday, 7 May 2019

Doreen Slinkard talks to Syd Kelly, a Tenterfield boy who found Hawkesbury pastures.

After being raised in Tenterfield a devout Catholic, then joining the priesthood for three years, Syd Kelly realised his ambition of becoming a priest was over the day he was taken to hospital and fell in love with his nurse. Alas, she did not reciprocate.
Embarrassed to return to Tenterfield after ‘‘handing in the cross’’, Syd bought 2ha at Glenorie and built up a flooring business where his son Peter is now the CEO. After marrying Carolyn Stephenson-Cable, the love of his life, Syd wanted to move back to his other passion, the country but Carolyn wanted to live in an historic home not more than 90 minutes’ from Sydney and they found their home in December 1994.
